Nominations Now Open for Resident Officer Positions On GAFP and GHFA Boards for 2018

The Georgia Academy of Family Physicians (GAFP) and the Georgia Healthy Family Alliance (GHFA) have four exciting opportunities for Resident members to participate in board leadership activities in 2018.  Details on open positions and nomination forms are listed below.  Nominations must be submitted by November 30, 2017.  Email voting for the Georgia Academy’s open seats will take place from December 1-8, 2017.

Georgia Healthy Family Alliance Board of Directors (www.georgiahealthyfamilyalliance.org)

1 position for 2018 

The Georgia Healthy Family Alliance (GHFA) has an open position for one new resident board member for a two-year term.

The new Resident Board Member will serve as an Alliance Trustee and act as a liaison for their peers regarding GHFA projects including:

  • The Community Health Grant Program – A program that awards grants annually to member affiliated projects addressing health care needs in communities throughout Georgia.
  • Tar Wars – A tobacco education program presented to more than 3,000 fourth and fifth graders in Georgia each year.
  • The “Your Giving is Great Medicine” Capital Campaign to raise $4 million dollars to support our ongoing projects and expand our community-related activities.

The GHFA Board of Trustees will select one candidate from those that are nominated for this position.  Travel stipends will be given to the resident GHFA Trustee to support a portion of their travel expenses to GHFA Board meetings. The GHFA Board meets four times a year.

2018 GHFA Board Meetings will be held:    

March 4 – Board Meeting, Atlanta

June 7 – Conference Call Board Meeting

August 4 – Board Meeting, Savannah

November 9 – Fall Quarterly Board Meeting, Stone Mountain, held in conjunction with 2018 GAFP Scientific Assembly

GHFA Board Members are encouraged to attend all Board meetings.                                                                                                          

GAFP Board of Directors

For 2018, we have 3 Resident Board of Director openings:  two Resident Alternate positions (one for a 1-year term and one for a 2-year term), and a Resident Director position. Dr. Jessica Brumfield will serve as a Resident Board Director for 2018 as she served as the Alternate Director for 2017.  The candidate with the most votes will become a new resident board director, the candidate in second place will become the resident alternate director serving a two-year term with the second year being a voting director, and finally the candidate with the most votes following will become the alternate board director serving a one year term.

As a board member, your main duties are to be in close contact with your peers and report back to the Board when we meet four times a year, and you will be given first option to participate in the National Conference of Students and Residents next summer.

Additionally, many of your travel expenses will be covered (see below).

We encourage all four of the resident board representatives to attend each meeting.

Board Attendance Policy:

The resident district has 2 voting seats.  As long as at least two resident board members are in attendance, the others can optionally attend or not attend without being charged with an unexcused absence.  It is your duty to be in contact with each other to determine attendance.

If at least two are not in attendance (excluding the approval of an excused absence*), then all will receive an unexcused absence for that meeting.  However, if at least two delegates are in attendance, then no one will receive an unexcused absence for that meeting.

*Excused Absences for Board Meetings

Excused absences include emergency illness/funeral of a close family member or if a Board member must miss a GAFP Board meeting due to a conflict if representing the GAFP or AAFP at another meeting.  Absences and excused absences would be reflected in the minutes.

 

In addition, the Board of Directors voted to allow each Board member to attend one CME meeting per year for free if registered by the early bird deadline.  You may choose from the Summer CME weekend in June 2018 or the Annual Meeting in November 2018.

August 2-4, 2018 – Kansas City, MO- AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students

The GAFP will pay two scholarships each of $599 to cover expenses for two resident and two student Board members (invitation to participate will be emailed in the spring).

Sunday, August 5, 2018 – Hyatt Regency, Savannah

Thursday, November 8, 2018 – GAFP Fall Board Meeting – Marriott Evergreen Conference Center, Atlanta, GA, at the GAFP Annual Meeting.

Travel stipends available subject to the following:

Comp registration to GAFP Annual Meeting OR Summer CME Weekend (Committee Conclaves have no registration fee), mileage (subject to standard IRS rate, currently $.535), and one night’s accommodation at GAFP hotel block room rate.  Incidentals, including wireless, parking, or meals (other than those served during GAFP functions at no charge) are at your own expense.
