About GAFP
“To promote the health of the citizens of Georgia”
About GAFP
Established in 1947, the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians (GAFP) serves as the Georgia chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). With a mission to promote the health of Georgians, GAFP advances the specialty of family medicine through education, advocacy, and service. Our membership includes over 3,300 family physicians, residents, and medical students statewide, all committed to delivering comprehensive, patient-centered care. As a constituent chapter of the AAFP, GAFP aligns with national standards while addressing the unique needs of family physicians in Georgia.
“The AAFP supports every stage of a family physician’s career from aspiring student to seasoned professional. Embracing the diversity of family physicians’ roles and experiences, we offer the tailored, evidence-based resources, advocacy and communities needed to empower your practice of family medicine.”

Our Pillars
-
Education
Education is a cornerstone of GAFP’s mission. The organization offers a variety of Continuing Medical Education (CME) opportunities, including conferences, workshops, and online resources, to ensure that family physicians remain at the forefront of medical knowledge and practice. These educational initiatives are designed to support physicians at every stage of their careers, fostering a culture of lifelong learning and excellence in patient care.
-
Advocacy
Advocacy is another key pillar of GAFP’s work. The organization actively engages with state and federal policymakers to represent the interests of family physicians and their patients. Through the GAFP Political Action Committee (PAC), members can contribute to efforts that influence healthcare policy and promote the value of family medicine. Additionally, GAFP emphasizes service by supporting community health initiatives and encouraging members to participate in programs that address public health challenges across Georgia.
-
Service
Service is the third pillar of GAFP’s work and reflects the Academy’s commitment to building strong relationships—among members and within communities. GAFP fosters opportunities for professional networking, peer collaboration, and community outreach that extend beyond clinical practice. Whether supporting local health initiatives, mentoring future physicians, or volunteering through the Georgia Healthy Family Alliance (GHFA), members engage meaningfully in service that strengthens the fabric of family medicine in Georgia.
Georgia Healthy Family Alliance
Complementing GAFP’s mission is the Georgia Healthy Family Alliance (GHFA), the philanthropic 501(c)(3) arm of the Academy. GHFA enhances the well-being of Georgians through educational and outreach programs that promote healthy practices consistent with the principles of family medicine. One of GHFA’s most impactful initiatives is the Community Health Grants Program which provides for grants totaling up to $5,000 each for GAFP member projects addressing health care access in communities throughout Georgia. Current Georgia Academy of Family Physicians members including medical students, residents and active/ life members are eligible to apply. GHFA also administers the Escaping Vaping (formerly Tar Wars) program, recognized for educating elementary students on the dangers of tobacco and vaping products. Through these and other efforts, GHFA extends GAFP’s commitment to community service and public health.
